So.. couple quick updates.. for all those wondering what the heck a Chukar is.. I snapped a pic for you today..
Yes the top of his head is too bright, but I am pleased with the remaining exposure so not much I can do about it.. and the original is sharper than this.. Anyhow this is a Chukar.. bigger than a pigeon, not quite as big/broad/square as a chicken..
Speaking of chickens, I have been collecting the eggs in the morning, and I have to admit it’s one of the highlights of my day. Mainly because I am always surprised at how many eggs there are.. the novelty will probably wear off, and so then I will just turn it into a guessing game. Either way, it’s fun to go in and never know how many there will be. Before I left today I had collected over a dozen.. the days are blending together now so I can’t recall for sure the exact total (I almost want to say 18).
Today we also released the homing pigeons… (all but one anyway that lost it’s tail while we were training them).. Hopefully more have flown back since I left work this afternoon or we won’t have very many birds to train with. When I left, only 3 out of the 9 we released had returned.. 2 others were trying to figure out how to get back in and driving the dogs bonkers in doing so. And hopefully the mother of the current babies returns (had I known which one that was I wouldn’t have flown her.. but it’s hard to tell as they don’t set)..
Anyway, that’s the bird news for the day. I think we are going to start Luna’s force fetch training soon (I know there are some that don’t believe in this method.. feel free to comment).. right now we will get her used to the table. I’m not looking forward to this part of hunt training, but I will have to get over it, as she will take to it well I’m sure. And I do think she is too independent to rely on her fetching reliably in a hunt test.. Trust me, I have wanted to avoid it if possible.. but I have a pretty good feel for my dog, and we can always stop if we feel she can’t handle it, and build things back up from there and take whatever she gives us. Anyway, we shall not dwell on that.
Luna has a 3 day show coming up in York, PA.. I am trying to fatten her up, it has been very hard.. It didn’t dawn on me until last night to feed her potatoes.. I doubt we can make a difference in 3 days, but it won’t be for lack of trying.. she is loving her potato and kibble dinners though, heck she has been quite an eater for over 6 months now probably. I don’t know what has gotten into her, but she has decided she rather likes food.
Ok, enough said.. time to hit the hay.. waking up at 4:30 AM is still killing me.. BUT books on CD are seriously helping in the car, with the drive.
G’night
these are great pictures!
Good photos. Your Chukar looks a lot like our red legged partridge, if not identical. I have often thought about keeping pigeon or quail to help with the dog training but there never seems to be enough time to get started! Maybe one day. I know nothing about force fetch so cannot comment but will watch with interest. Have fun.
