My water-pup(s)

Some of you may be wondering where the Lunatic has been lately… Let’s let the pictures speak for themselves.

With the big-hot-insanely-humid -heat wave we had, we were driven to the water.  Despite the fact that the rivers/creeks/puddles are high from all the rain we have gotten, it was the only way to wear these pups out in this heat.  Do you think our dogs like the water???

It also gave me a great chance to try out the new waterproof camera. Still having a hard time getting the most from this camera, which means I need to do more work to photos when I get it home. Hopefully the water will clear up so I can start practicing some underwater shots. I hate being limited by a point and shoot, but it is nice to have a camera I don’t have to worry about in the water.

She is always on the lookout for water bugs and minnows too…

The water time also gave us a chance to try out the life jacket I bought for Luna, not that she needs any help swimming.

Soon as she figured out she could swim normal with it on she was happy as a clam to wear it.

It didn’t prevent her from hunting for minnows either

And it sure takes the worry out of doing things like this with the pups.  Yes I do plan to get one for Wyatt too but wanted to see how this one held up. Soon as I go back to the pet store I will pick one up for him as I sort of worry about him more than Luna.  Luna grew up exploring the rivers with me (while I waded and fished… not via kayak) but Wyatt takes loving the water to a new level and I worry about him not realizing he is tired. So for my peace of mind I will now use a life jacket for each on occasion while we are out.

I figured my 3rd trip out in a kayak was enough practice to start to try and include Luna in the fun.  I know, I am crazy to try and put a Vizsla in a kayak right?? But I like to think both of our balance is pretty darn good… and there is only one way to find that out.   This is a shot I took of her sitting in my lap while I paddle.  She started out sitting behind me but was not content to sit still and stay there, so she climbed into my lap (how she managed to do that without flipping us I don’t know)…

After I had her hop out to see how that went, I invited her back in and coaxed her to the front.  Do you think she likes this lookout point?? Can’t get much more perfect for this Vizsla girl.  Now  I just need to settle on some kayak model options that will allow me to bring her on occasion too.  Anyone else kayak with their dog and have suggestions?? If you missed my post on my first kayak adventure go check it out on my photo blog.  It was a great first introduction to this great sport, and has me hooked.

What do you like to do with the pups when the heat sets in?  Have you ever brought your pets on boat rides with you?

  1. Ooh I love that first one! Luna looks like an alligator. I have never been kayaking before, I wonder how Amber would do?
We have a pond that we frequent when it gets hot and Amber swims around looking for bullfrogs, much like Luna’s minnow hunt. Anything river like nearby is all on leash only except for a little stretch of river about a half hour from home that we use a lot.
What a beautiful spot you have and I love how comfortable the dogs look swimming in front of the boat! Rye would never be that comfortable in water.

    Fab photos! 🙂

  3. Hi Y’all,

Love the kayak pics. I go boating all the time, but it’s a power boat that everybody can walk around within.

How can Luna get into the kayak without capsizing y’all? There is a ladder on our boat.

The Humans can go all the way down to the inland waterway from our shore home but they don’t take me that far…heat in the southeast restricts what hours I can be in the boat. A couple of alligators laying around our boat kept me from swimming last year.

    Y’all come by now,

Great pictures. Looks like a lot of fun and I would say that Luna likes her vantage point in front where she can see everything.

  5. Humidity. Ugh. Yes, I can relate. Nothing can beat mugginess better than a nice swim in the water. I think Luna is sporting her life jacket really well and, once Wyatt gets his own, they’ll be a stunning pair! It’s fantastic that you get to go kayaking while your pups go swimming—I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer weekend.

For us, well, it’s always hot in the tropics! We tend to hunker down indoors where it’s usually cooler. However, once the sun goes hiding behind the clouds, we’re out and about. Miss Maple’s favourite sport is fetch, but I’d like to introduce her to something new like swimming. I’ve always wondered, though, how can I avoid water from entering the ears and causing an infection? That’s the only worry that’s currently preventing me (and Miss Maple) from taking the ‘dive’! 😀

  6. Looks like they are having a blast enjoying the water. None of mine really enjoy the water, and I’ve tried on many occasions to get them accustomed to it. (Except Meadow, she’s only been to the water three times so far, so there is still hope that she will come around.)

I don’t blame you for trying out the vest first, before investing in a second. Dog supplies are pricey, and it’s good to try them out a little and see if they are worth the money.

These photos are just beautiful. It makes me so jealous of your water dogs when my dog has to be bribed just to wade in up to her knees. I guess I’ll just have to pretend I was there, hanging out with Luna. 🙂

You guys must have had so much fun–you know I’m jealous! 🙂

I, too, can’t wait for you to get some underwater shots!

  9. I love these pictures- Mike is dying to get a kayak so that he can take Riley fishing with him. Luna is such a pretty girl!

I think you got some beautiful pictures and both Luna and Wyatt look like they are having a wonderful time.
